How often should I have my piano tuned?

twice a year is a good goal for most households with a piano. Although, Once a year is more realistic for most piano owners and still a good goal to keep up.

  • By keeping your piano regularly in tune, you are helping keep the integrity of the pinblock (the laminated board that holds all of the tuning pins). The less the pins move around in the block the tighter they will stay allowing the piano to stay in tune longer.

  • A helpful way to remember to get your piano tuned is by following the seasons.  In late spring/summer when you turn the AC on for the season, or after turning the heat on for the fall/winter.

  • If your piano is heavily played, think church or school settings, or in a concert hall, tuning three to four times might be more appropriate.

Do you have a piano student at home?

Allowing a piano student to play on a tuned instrument will improve their ability to hear what pitch a particular note should have. If they are able to learn to play a song in tune it helps develop their aural skills as a musician. It can also reduce frustration.
If your student goes to a piano teacher whose piano is in tune and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star sounds as it should, it can be highly frustrating and no assistance at all to go home and not be able to recognize the song as sounding the same. It is an injustice to your student, to whom you are spending lots of money to get the lessons, but don’t take the care to keep your home piano tuned.
